In the spring of year 540 the Byzantine Emperor Justinian Prima caught a terrible disease. He had a devoted general in his service, named Belisarius. This general took his ill master from Constantinople to the Katlanovo Spa.
Nevertheless, Belisarius had urgent business back home. He left his ruler with little hope that he would find him alive when he returns. After two months he returned, anxious about the state of his Emperor.
“Belisarius stood before the double stone gate. When the moved the two heavy boulders, the morning sun pierced inside the hall. The bright beams illuminated Justinian’s face, and as he spoke, Belisarius’s fate in miracles expanded. ‘Katlanovo is the kettle where the sun is born. If something can heal me, then this place of water and air must be it.’ As the gates opened completely, Belisarius could see his master in glorious splendor and impeccable majesty. Justinian was smiling and holding his hands wide open.”
